The leading edge of the big storm that I had been waiting for is now rolling down between the granite walls of Hickory Nut Gorge. I'm standing on top of the Chimney, ready to bolt for cover when the lightning starts.

Another view of the storm moving in from the Rock. Note the little wooden railing higher up the cliff face beneath the ledge - that area provides a view of the valley below and is known as the Opera House. Neat Place!

The flag snapping in the wind, a few fat raindrops beginnng to Splat! on the walkway and the storm is here.

Heading back inside the restaurant and gift shop for a few minutes to wail out the rain, I check ou the book selection, making sure that the book written by Peter Barr, a hiking buddy of mine, is front and center. His book on the lookout towers of North Carolina has proven to be a big seller. It appeals not only to hikers and backpackers, but also to drivers and bikers that simply enjoy visiting the scenic highpoints.

Rain pours down outside, as I enjoy a big double scoop of strawberry ice cream inside the clifftop restaurant. That's the little town of Chimney Rock in the valley far below my vantage point.

As the rain eases off, I return to the cliffs. The storm has moved eastward and is now dumping heavy rain on Lake Lure.

The view from inside the Opera Box, tucked away in a deep crevice in the cliffs. I kicked back in here for a while to wait out another passing shower.

The top of Chimney Rock, as seen from inside the Opera Box.

The large boulder that is perched precariously on the edge of the cliff in this photo is known as the Devils Head, but to me, it looks more like Beavis, of Beavis and Butthead fame...
