Wayah Road113 viewsJuly 4th, great day to ride Hwy. 64 from Brevard to Franklin, and then cut across the Wayah Road to Nantahala. Terrific weather and light traffic. Doesn't get much better on a bike.

Steve Parson and I near Inadu Knob on the AT95 viewsA good snowy hike on a clear cold winter's day in the Great Smoky Mountains. A dry grassy patch by the trail seemed like a good spot to take a break out of the wind.

Coon Trax on Capers Island277 viewsIt's a beautiful island, a wild strip of coast north of Charleston. If you go, be prepared for two things, bugs and coons. The bugs are horrific if the weather is warm - I prefer to go in cold weather. The coons are entertaining and annoying. They're everywhere and they're smart. A bear canister for your food wouldn't be a bad idea. Otherwise, plan on hanging your food between trees and hope for the best. Coolers are worthless - they won't even slow the little bandits down.

Hennessey in Cataloochee123 viewsA good way to spend a wet summer's day - bushwhack away from the fly-blown, chopped up trail in Cataloochee and kick back in the Hennessey to relax and listen to the rain come down. I have Brian to thank for getting me into summer bushwhacking - I doubt that I'll ever do some of the stuff that he enjoys - I have a deathly fear of poison oak - but so long as you watch your step, it's a great way to spend a cool day.Jul 13, 2008

Slidin' Falls on the Cullasaja River 115 viewsDown in the Cullasaja Gorge, these falls near Highlands draw a big crowd on July 4th. Some folks chose to slide down the falls into the deep pool below. Choose the wrong line, and there is about a four foot drop onto the rocks near the bottom. Good fun all around!Jul 05, 2008

Cullasaja Gorge leap of faith164 viewsThis popular swimming hole on the Culasaja River near Highlands, beside Hwy. 64, was packed with families enjoying the July 4th holiday. The jump from the cliff is about 20 feet into icy water. Some of the jumpers took a long, long time to take the leap.Jul 05, 2008

Selection of track casts140 viewsFrom the left - average sized griz track, bottom center is a grey wolf, and the top center and top right are black bear casts from the Great Smokies. The blackie tracks haven't been cleaned yet - after cleaning they will resemble the griz track in detail. Jul 02, 2008

Camp on Capers Island379 viewsIt sounded like a cool thing to do - camp within a few feet of the pounding surf. Well, actually it was, but sleep was out of the question. It was loud! The logs scattered along the beach were tossed by the surf, crashing here and there with loud booms. I finally gave it up and went for a 1 a.m. walk south along the edge of the surf. I'm glad that I did. Ships waited just off the coast to enter the harbor in Charleston, looking like brightly lit cities at sea.

Ghost Forest at Capers Island365 viewsHurricane Hugo did a number on Capers Island when it roared ashore in 1989. It hit with winds of 138 miles an hour and a 20 foot storm surge. It swamped a large area of forest, so that today, a ghostly forest rises from the surf at high tide.

Sunrise on Capers Island352 viewsIf you go, be sure to get up in time to see the sunrise. It's a spectacular sight as the sun peeps through the ghost forest.

Antje351 viewsGreat friend from way back. We met near Green River, Utah when she was making her first trip to America after the Iron Curtain fell, freeing the people of the former East Germany to travel, and travel they did. She couldn't believe the great wide open of the west, and was amazed that we were free to go wherever we wanted. The abundance of goods in grocery stores was a constant source of amazement to her. That was a long time ago, but she remains one of my best friends.
