This is known as the 'tourist' Bunion - the real Bunion lies a bit further east. The views from here, looking down the cliffs into the wilds of Lester Prong and Porters Creek, are really spectacular, and are especially so when the clouds are ripping across the high country.

Note the grey ghosts, all that's left of a once mighty forest of eastern hemlocks. The hemlock adelgid has devastated the virgin stands of hemlock in eastern America, with only a few healthy trees being saved.


If we had sufficient snowfall in the Smokies, there would probably be skiiers dropping off of this 'wall' below the Bunion.

One last look...

As we headed back to the Gap, the sun came out briefly.

A playground for those of us in this forum, the wild country in the upper valley of Greenbrier is a popular destination.
