I set up camp at campsite #8J6, right by the shore of Heart Lake. It's a site with all the amenities of good living in the Yellowstone backcountry - running water, good lighting, 'facilities' consisting of a little bitty wooden box toilet sitting out in the middle of a meadow behind the camp, and a nice bear pole with some huge Grizzly claw marks decorating the support trees. That's the Diamond Brand Free Spirit tent - for years, it was my tent of choice when camping in Yellowstone. Since this trip, I've switched to lighter accomodations - either my Walrus Zoid, or the Big Agnes. They are both less than half the weight of the Free Spirit, but I have to admit that I miss having the extra space. Here I'd hang out for two more days, soaking up the incredible scenery, and living the good life. It was well worth the easy walk in (about 14 miles or so) just to enjoy the sunsets over Mt. Sheridan and to hear the wild cry of the loon each evening as the sun dropped behind the mountain.. |
