Surprise Creek, not far from Heart River. This is the point where the trail to Yellowstone Lake, across the Divide, takes off. I hadn't intended to walk far, but on the last morning that I was in the area, I headed out the trail to Surprise Creek and just kept going. I was wearing my Teva camp shoes, not exactly good for long walks, so I knew that I'd soon have to turn back. That's not easy in country like this. As I passed through a brushy section not far past this point, I finally decided that it was time to head back. When I turned, I spotted first one, then another blond head pop up. On opposite sides of the trail. I figured that the young Griz were probably siblings that hadn't separated yet. I spent the next 5 minutes hollering and making a hellacious amount of noise before they disappeared over the rise and I slipped back towards camp. Not long after, I shouldered my pack and headed out. Bottom shot: Heart Lake just before sunset from camp. |
