The Alaska Basin in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness

With thunderstoms pounding the high country like clockwork each afternoon, this campsite was chosen because of it's location away from high points and the lakes. Not only that, but the trees were high enough to make it a bit easier to hang my pack (hopefully) out of reach of the bears. I spotted one on the hillside from time to time, high above the campsite, but it seemed to be more interested in gorging on the berries than in trying to snag my Ramen noodles.

These were the first two people that I'd seen since passing the two hikers when I was climbing the Devils Stairs a couple of days ago. The two horsemen were doing trailwork, repairing waterbars, and laying rock in some of the muddiest spots.

There are acres of the smoothly polished stone splashed across the high country at the head of South Teton Canyon. It makes an excellent spot to kick back to enjoy the sunsets.
