The Alaska Basin in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness

The trail below the Alaska Basin drops through a series of glades and open meadows alongside the bustling waters of South Teton Creek. In the early part of the season, the creek swells with snowmelt, making trips to the Basin area nearly impossible. A day or two after I passed this spot, a hiker heading into the Alaska Basin had his pack snatched while admiring a waterfall. The pack was sitting right next to him, but the bear made a spectacular hit and run with the goodies. I believe that the bear was later 'euthanized' - that's a touchy feely way of saying "killed".

Lots of open country to ramble through - I could spend a lifetime exploring the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. It's good country.
