The jagged tooth of Buck Mountain towers over the head of Darby Canyon. In this photo, I'm working my way around the slopes of the Wedge as I near the upper basin and my camp for the next few days. Buck Mountain is over on the east side of the Teton Range, south of the Cathedral Group that includes the Grand. Lower photo: I chose a stand of alpine fir on the edge of this meadow to set up camp in. The campsite had a terrific view to the west of Idaho, and to the east, the peaks of Mount Meek, Mount Jedediah Smith, and Mount Bannon caught the last rays of the evening sun. The mountainside was alive with hummingbirds, more than I've ever seen before. There must have been hundreds of them, buzzing and swooping across the flower-carpeted meadows and slopes. |
