Top photo shows the Darby Canyon trail as it winds along just west of the Wedge, seen here as the highest point on the ridge.

Below: The path, now more of a game trail, cuts around the eastern side of the Wedge to the edge of the cliffs that overlook Teton Canyon. It was somewhere along here that I first tried cutting across what looked like a wide smooth basin below Mount Jedediah Smith. After working my way across a couple of hundred feet of razor-sharp limestone, I changed my mind. The next time I go back to the badlands, I'll wear sturdier leather hiking shoes, instead of the Nike running shoes that I had on that day.
