Above: An old log, ripped apart by a bear, reveals the plunder within - a huge glob of ant eggs, tended by a frantically swarming mass of ants. There is a tremendous amount of nutrition in an ant nest like this one, and a variety of animals enjoy exploiting the bounty. (The ants taste like green blueberries - yes, I've tried 'em!) Below: Do you see the grouse on the right side of the photo? I spotted a small group of the birds near the trailhead of the Darby Canyon climb. The grouse is incredibly fearless around humans. I've had them come up and peck at my camera lens as I lay on the ground taking their photo. These were typical, approaching closely to see what I was up to. |
