Grand Targhee and the South Leigh Lakes, Jedediah Smith Wilderness

Above: Another look at the upper end of South Leigh Canyon and Granite Basin. On the other side of the ridge above Granite Basin is the Green Lake Basin, which lies at the head of North Leigh Canyon. It can be accessed via the Green Lakes Trail.
The limestone on the Wheatfield looks a lot like that at the head of Darby Canyon - I wonder if it's as rough. A trail climbs up out of the North Teton Canyon to the ridgeline on the Mill Creek trail, then drops back down into Beards Wheatfield. The trailhead down at the North Teton Canyon trail is sometimes obscured by high weeds and brush.

Bottom: Looking back towards Freds Mountain and Marys Nipple. The first shots on the previous page of Beards Wheatfield were taken from the low pass between Marys Nipple and Freds Mountain. The trail swings around the south side of Marys Nipple and then follows the ridge out to where this pic was taken. It's pretty faint in places and gets very little use. The views are superb, offering long distance looks into both of the Teton Canyons, as well as South Leigh Canyon and over to Beard Mountain. Fires were burning in eastern Idaho on the day I made this hike, draping the Teton mountains in a grey haze.
