The Devils Stairs trail in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness. If not for the thin air of high elevation, the Devils Stairs trail wouldn't be that difficult. It climbs 1,100 feet in one mile, not that extreme by eastern standards. This photo takes in the view from about halfway up the Stairs, looking up the South Teton Canyon towards Alaska Basin. The classic u-shape of a glacially carved canyon is very evident. This shot was taken in the third week of July, when the wilderness seemed to be one huge flower garden. That's Buck Mountain jutting up on the horizon beyond the Basin.
