The Devils Stairs/Alaska Basin loop in South Teton Canyon

A look at the Alaska Basin trail from a point just below the turnoff to the Devils Stairs trail at the 2.8 mile mark. Up to this point, the hike has followed the lively South Fork of Teton Creek through a series of meadows. The broad canyon was carved by glaciers and offers a relatively easy path up to the Alaska Basin.

On this particular trip, though, I chose to loop up to the Teton Canyon Shelf via the Devils Stairs.

Moose are common, especially in the wet meadows of the lower portion of the trail. I've also counted 11 bear while standing in one spot during late September in the upper canyon.
