The trail up the South Teton Canyon Shelf in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness

Top: Glacial erratics, left behind by retreating glaciers, accent the broad meadows of the upper Shelf. Mt. Meek Pass is the low gap between the snow-covered slopes of Mt. Meek on the right and the flat-topped little peak on the skyline. The Teton Crest trail wanders through the Pass along the Death Canyon Shelf in the distance. The cliff at the right marks the point where you leave the South Teton Canyon Shelf to explore the Death Canyon Shelf. The Teton Crest trail runs from Teton Pass, far to the south, passing canyon after canyon along the way to the southern boundary of Yellowstone. It joins the trail I'm on just this side of Mt. Meek Pass and then wanders across the alpine meadows to the Alaska Basin.

The Teton Crest Trail

This shot was taken from just north of Mt. Meek on the Crest trail as I walked towards the Alaska Basin. The Sheep Steps are a little further out the trail. I'll pick up the next series of pages from there.

This section of trail runs along at about the 10,000 ft. elevation. Even though I was carrying a 50+ lb. pack, the day was so beautiful that I hardly noticed the weight. This region is on the agenda for this year's trip west - can't wait to return to the 'good side' of the Tetons.
