When you get to the point in the climb that the top of the Sluice runs into a wall of rock, it's time to climb out of the Sluice to your left (east), and to complete the climb up the steep, grassy 'meadow' that lies along the top of the Wall. You might spot a rock cairn or two along the way to mark the route, but so long as you're climbing up the grassy slope, you'll come out on the Appalachian Trail near the intersection with the Dry Sluice Gap trail. I've climbed this portion in mid-winter before during a thaw when the entire mountainside became a waterfall. Deep snow can also add to the fun. Below: Peter takes a moment to reconnoiter the slope above before charging up to the next vantage point. |
