The huge pile of debris pictured here had swept down from a nearby razor-backed ridge, burying a long stretch of Dry Sluice. The only way through was to climb up and over, and then to work back through the doghobble above the slide to get back into the Sluice. In places, the 'skywalk' was 35 or 40 feet above the ground. It opened up some great views of the valley below. Below: The Sluice not far from the top, near the point where you traverse to the east (left) to avoid the last vertical stretch of climbing. Everything you see in this photo is delicately balanced on the steep hillside, waiting for a push to send it rocketing to the valley below. It pays to keep sufficient distance between climbers to allow time to dodge the rocks that inevitably go bouncing down the ravine. |
