Jump, swim, crawl or climb - decisions, decisions, decisions. Peter considers his options below the Upper Cascades.

Below, the limited view of the Upper Cascades. It's not a place of outstanding photo opportunities, with trees and heavy brush blocking most attempts to get a good photo. That certainly doesn't limit the beauty though. The wildness will blow you away. The manway cuts up the west bank, traversing a mossy boulder field, laced with huge fallen trees. It is a place that calls for great caution, since the holes between the rocks are often covered and hidden beneath green mats of moss and twigs. Step on one thinking that it will offer solid support, and the next thing that you hear might be the snap, crackle and pop of a breaking bone.

Once above the Upper Cascades, the few signs of trail markings disappear. You may spot the occasional faded sliver of ribbon, but by this point, you're simply heading upstream by whatever route that happens to present itself.
