Top: Another view of the McGee Springs campsite #44 on Hyatt Ridge. This is the end of the 'official' trail on Hyatt Ridge. The trail once extended on out across Hyatt Ridge to the Tricorner region, but hasn't been maintained for nearly 4 decades. Below, the rich growth of white-fringed phacelia looks like a light snowfall in early spring. The bear cables for the site are located right in the center of the open area, about 200 feet beyond my tent. One of the few downsides of staying at this site is the practice of many of the horse groups of tying their rides up right in the middle of the swampy area at the head of McGee Springs Branch. I once watched in amazement as one of the riders scooped up water in a pot for cooking out of a muddy puddle right below the point where one of his horses was, at that very moment, taking a dump in the little stream. I didn't bother to tell him that a clear, bubbling spring was located above the streambed only a hundred feet downstream, figuring that the spring would be better served by the lack of knowledge. |
