A slightly different look at the Balsam Mountain range. I'll leave the place ID's here for reference. This is a stitch made up of photos shot with a 'normal' lens and it gives a fairly accurate depiction of what you actually see when standing at this spot near the Blue Ridge Parkway. The previous photo, though similar to this one, was shot with a mild telephoto effect, slightly distorting the perspective.

5,676 ft. Spruce Mountain is the peak at the northeast (left) end of the dark spruce-covered ridge on the horizon. To the right of Spruce Mountain is 5,888 ft. Chiltoes Mountain. The right end of the ridge dips down towards Polls Gap, not quite visible in this photo, being hidden by the foliage. The deep valley in the foreground is probably the drainage of Bunches Creek, which empties into Raven Fork not far below Big Cove. Aptly named Straight Fork lies behind the last long ridge that drops down from Spruce Mountain in the distance, Chiltoskle Ridge. On this side of Chiltoskle Ridge is the deep valley of Stillwell Creek, which empties into Straight Fork below the Cherokee fish hatchery.

Horse Ridge is next, and then Redman Ridge, just beyond Bunches Creek. Most of that country is Cherokee land.

OK, now you might want to dig out your map to verify that I've got this one right, but over on the left side of the photo, on the other side of Straight Fork, you can see Hyatt Ridge winding down towards Big Cove. Follow winding Hyatt Ridge into the distance and I think that Mt. Guyot and Old Black can barely be seen on the skyline as a dark jagged crest.
Also barely visible near Guyot is the Balsam Mountain crest near Tricorner Knob. The mighty Balsam Mountain range ends at Tricorner Knob where it meets the main range of the Great Smoky Mountains.
