Campsite #28 is located on an old railway bed about 5.5 miles from the trailhead in the Middle Prong of Little River. The walk up to this point is pleasant and fairly smooth. The site is mostly flat, being on an old roadbed, but is close to the main trail and gets pretty muddy in wet conditions. Also, the horse traffic and trail damage on the trail above the camp is horrendous. I'd suggest that if you stay here, and overall, it really isn't that bad a site if the conditions are good, choose one of the sites on the other side of the little stream, in front of Holly and Steve in the photo. It will mean rock-hopping, but it's a small brook and shouldn't present a problem. The sites on that side are in much better shape and are further from the trail... and the horse rack and flies. I'd give the site about a 4.5 on a scale of 10. The bottom photo shows Campsite #26, way up on top of Miry Ridge. Now that's more like it! In the little brown trail guide, it's mentioned that the site straddles the trail. That's an old description. The site now sits about 200 feet off of the trail in a small grove of hemlock. It's right on top of the ridge, and on windy nights, you'll be hoping that the tent has really been staked out securely. Water is a bit of a walk too, but for a site this pretty, that's a small concern. The site gets a lot of use, but was clean when we passed through. There were signs in the snow of at least 8 tents from the previous night, evidence of its popularity. It's not a long hike in, either from the Jakes Creek trailhead or from the Middle Prong of Little River, but I'd rather eat lightbulbs than to have to tote a backpack up the Lynn Camp Prong trench. This one gets a solid 8 out of 10, mostly for location. |
