These maps were created by Carl Core. They show the rugged topography of the western end of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The top map shows the view from the western end of the Smokies, looking back across the Chilhowee Lake(at the bottom of the photo.) Cades Cove is the flat 'bowl' near the center right of the map, surrounded by mountains. Fontana Lake is visible in the upper right side of the map, with the smaller Cheoah and Calderwood Lakes snaking through the mountains below. The lower map illustrates a more familiar perspective on the Great Smokies, showing them as seen from high above, with the range laid out from west to east. In this view, Cades Cove is visible as an oval flat basin surrounded by mountains, with the green watershed of Little River cutting through the Chilhowee Mountains just to the north, outside of the Park. Townsend and Maryville are located in that drainage. Fontana Lake, with its many arms, lies at the bottom of the map. If you're familiar with the Smokies, it's a lot of fun to see how many of the features that you can identify in the two different views. The southwestern ridges are easy, using Fontana as a guide to locate the long spines running down from the crest of the Smokies. Once you identify the major side ridges, it's easy to connect the drainages of the major creeks that lie between them, and from that, the various peaks and gaps. |
