Perhaps it's a good thing that I didn't make the climb on this trip - the failure to do so will offer a great reason to return this year to one of my favorite destinations in the Yellowstone backcountry, Heart Lake.

Below: Looking up the broad meadow from the lakeshore towards Paycheck Pass and the drainage of Witch Creek. That's Witch Creek just before it flows into Heart Lake. This meadow seemed to be full of sandhill cranes and mule deer, though they were for the most part, too far away to get a decent photo. A small footbridge spans the creek by the lakeshore.
