Top: A game trail winds westward along the Bench in Lamar Valley. Specimen Ridge rises on the left (south) side of the photo. Below: A view across the Bench, looking south towards the wide expanse of Specimen Ridge. This is a wild, beautiful region where it's possible to see every major member of the incredible cast of wildlife in Yellowstone. Grizzly are very common on and around the Bench and every precaution should be taken when you travel there, including carrying pepper spray and using good bear country etiquette. Make noise, especially when approaching stands of timber or hidden ravines. Don't approach any kind of carcass, regardless of whether or not you see any predators in the area. Griz often lay on a daybed up to a quarter mile from their 'banquet' and will vigorously defend their food. |
