Each of these panoramas are stiches of 4 photos. At top, the view is from a low hill just east of the road to Slough Creek, looking across the valley floor towards the west end of the 'Bench'. The Bench is a low plateau just below Specimen Ridge. For wolf and bear watchers, it's a popular spot to scan with their scopes from the road, but very little of the Bench is visible from the road. It's a rare thing to hike the Bench without encountering a lot of wildlife, including Grizzly, black bear, elk, wolves, and bison. I stay away from the east end of the Bench, since it's visible from the road, and I don't want to interfere with the folks down by the road that are gathered to scope out Specimen Ridge and the Bench. The bottom photo was taken from near the top of Specimen Ridge, looking northeast towards the Bench, with the snow-covered peaks of the Beartooth Range in the background. Sitting on the ridge in late evening, listening to the wolves howling in the valley below is an unforgettable experience. |
