As the elk show faded from view, I started to pack up my camp in preparation for the day's trek to the next site. I decided to spend some time exploring the geyser basin before leaving. It's only a short distance from 8R5 and is one of the prettiest thermal areas in the Park.

Above, Shoshone Creek meanders through the basin, with geysers and hot springs warming the stream as they pour from the bank at streamside. This is pretty large thermal area, with a great variety of features. I've never been much of a 'geyser gazer', but I've got to admit that the 'wild' thermal areas are pretty fascinating. It's good to get away from the teeming crowds, the boardwalks, and the honking horns of massive motorhomes and to enjoy a wild basin void of boardwalks and handrails.

Below, one of the many geysers in the Shoshone Lake basin spews boiling water and steam into the chill morning air.
