Fresh Griz sign, in the form of both scat and tracks, was evident in the canyon from the time that we first entered the woods. This is one of the prettiest stretches of forest in the Slough Creek drainage, thanks to the dense stands of trees and huge boulders, with the roaring waters of the Creek just below. A she-Griz with two cubs had been spotted on the hillside behind the campground the day before, and a small boar had been seen near the Slough Creek trailhead. While it's important to give the bears plenty of room and your utmost respect, the chances are that you'll never have the honor of spotting one when you're hiking. As a rule, they try their best to avoid human contact. It's the one in a million chance that you might run across one in a bad mood that makes hiking the backcountry of Yellowstone really special and unforgettable.
