The canyon above Slough Creek Campground has several long cascades and waterfalls that have helped keep the rainbow trout that were introduced into Lamar River and Soda Butte Creek from hybridizing with the native cutthroat trout. As a result, the cutthroat fishing from the First Meadow on up is considered to be as good as anywhere in the Park. It's a rugged canyon, with not much more than a faint game trail running along the edge of the creek, now hugging the shoreline and then climbing to cross ridges high above the torrent. The canyon is seldom fished, since most fishermen prefer the easier casting in the meadows above. The incredibly dense forest, with its piles of huge boulders, also has tends to make you very, very aware that you are traversing prime Grizzly habitat. |
