This lake is a familiar sight to travelers between Norris and Mammoth. Nymph Lake is surrounded by hot springs and is a popular stopping spot by the roadside. Note the 'new' growth of lodgepole pines on the hillside beyond the lake. This area was burned over by the huge North Fork fire in 1988 and the anti-Park crowd loved to point to this region when making claims about the Park being "ruined forever" by the fires and by the fire management. Well, nothing succeeds like success, and this burgeoning re-growth of timber is proof positive that the fires only improved the health of the Yellowstone ecosystem.

Below, a bison beside the rangers museum at the Norris Campground gives me a baleful look as it steps out from behind a small pine.
