Coyotes and pronghorn seem to have a special relationship. Of course, it's based on a predator/prey existence, but sometimes the tables are turned. I watched one coyote over on the Blacktail Plateau as it stalked three pronghorn that were walking up a draw below him. They spotted him before he could close within 50 feet and immediately ran towards him. He raced away, then stopped and pretended to ignore their presence. They also halted, but kept a close watch on the coyote as it turned to stalking the numerous groundsquirrels on the hillside. Each time the unlucky coyote would start to rush one of the little rodents, the antelope would charge him, spoiling his hunt. This went on for about 30 minutes. Occasionally the coyote would appear to lose his temper and charge after the pronghorn - sometimes they'd bolt away for a short distance, but usually they'd turn the charge on him. I video-taped the entire incident. It's one of my favorite tapes. Below, a coyote that appears to be calmly resting is actually watching closely as a family of ground squirrels gather at the entrance to their burrow. |
