I have to admit that when spring arrives and the weather starts to warm up, the bugs emerge, and poison oak carpets the woodlands, that I'm not too enthusiastic about pounding out the miles on the trail. Instead, I switch over to my sea kayak, paddling instead of walking. It gives me access to some places that I would rarely see if I had to hike in to see them, and is a terrific workout to boot. I still hit the trail on occasion, even in the dead of summer, but the yak is a welcome option. Often, we combine the two, using the yaks to reach a remote trailhead, or in the case of the photo above, Leigh Canyon in the Grand Teton National Park. Leigh Canyon is tough to reach on foot, involving miles of scrambling through tangled, un-trailed timber just to reach the bottom of the canyon. |
